Wick

Course:    Wick Golf Club

Location:   Wick, Caithness.

Brief description:  Wick has returned to its links origins. A six hole course in 1870, nine holes at Reiss Links by 1873. The course became eighteen holes in 1907.  (35 out and 34 back in). Its Centenary in 1970 was celebrated with an exhibition match between golfing legends, Ronnie Shade and Eric Brown. I wish I had witnessed that.

What to expect of the course: The oldest established golf club on the NC500. Nine holes out and nine back in - a Classic Scottish Links. Wick has everything a golfer could ask for: sand dunes, rolling fairways, well positioned bunkers and fast rolling greens.

The course is now 6,200 yards, courtesy of modern changes made by Ronan Rafferty. If you are a keen birdwatcher as well as golfer, Wick is just the place for you too.

What to expect of the overall visit: An adequate car park and spacious clubhouse await visitors to this northerly gem. Check in here and receive a special Caithness greeting. The course is all that a Classic Scottish Links should be and is an absolute pleasure to play. A few rough edges can be tolerated. If this course was in East Lothian or Ayrshire, it would be mobbed.

Is it worth the trip to our most northern coast?……You bet your new fancy putter it is.!!
