Course: Thornton Golf Club
Location: Thornton, Fife
Brief description: Thornton could be described as a hidden gem as it is tucked away beyond the railway in the town. It is 6,200 yards long. (34 out and 36 in) a flattish parkland course, tree lined and cleverly bunkered. The course has a testing finishing five holes, including the par 3 14th called ‘Burn.’
What to expect of the course: Tucked between the railway and the River Ore to the east of Thornton, the course is very peaceful but does pack a punch. The holes are tree lined and its trees play a part in scoring all around the course. Three par 3s on the front nine are fair and attractive. The one par 3 on the back nine is stroke index hole three. Each nine has a par 5. Save your energy and courage for the last five holes and think seriously about your strategy before playing the 17th.
What to expect of the overall visit: After driving under the railway, follow the club’s drive to the good car park. Make your way to the pro shop at the front of the clubhouse. This is a very friendly and helpful shop. The clubhouse is modern with first class facilities. F&B is good, honest golf club fare served by friendly, happy people. The lounge is large and open plan yet relaxing and welcoming.
Thornton has a lovely history, much of it linked to the railway or railway companies. It is hidden away a wee bit but it will make a good impression.
