Southerness

Course:    Southerness Golf Club

Location:   Southerness, Dumfries

Brief description:  Southerness is a stunning links course built after WW2 on a raised beach with views over the Solway Firth.

Long, testing par 4s and wonderful par 3s seriously test golfers’ abilities.  One of Britain’s greatest links courses.

What to expect of the course: Largely unsung yet visited by discerning golfers from far afield. Sandy soil with heather lining many fairways. Southerness is a strong test and appreciated by traditionalists. Solid challenging golf on tight, crisp turf is further enhanced by lovely, firm, fast greens.

Only three par 4s are under 400 yards. The par three 15th and 17th make for a tough finish. Make sure your long irons, fairway woods and short game are all sharp for your visit.

What to expect of the overall visit: The new clubhouse was opened in 1974. It is served by a good car park and is a wonderful place to eat, drink and socialise. Memorable visits can often find an array of lovely home baking much appreciated by all.

The Southerness area is steeped in history and is worth checking out. Southerness is often overlooked, tucked away in the south west corner of Scotland; its remoteness keeps it out of the wider gaze. Don’t you pass it by or consider it too far to drive; Southerness is truly excellent in every respect.
