Course: Silverknowes Golf Club
Location: Edinburgh
Brief description: A municipal course on the north side of Edinburgh commanding great views of the Firth of Forth with a large car park. Check in with the starter before playing.
What to expect of the course: If this was a private club everyone would wax lyrical about it. As it's municipal it doesn't have the budget nor the protection that private clubs enjoy BUT what a course! After playing towards the sea you then head back up towards the clubhouse and then back to the sea, through woodland all ending at the final hole, which was once the longest par 5 in the world at over 600 yards. The 16th is a kind of mad dog leg where you play short iron, then a long club, but apart from that it has a flawless layout, and it's quite inexpensive.
What to expect of the overall visit: A surprise! A great layout, which at times would benefit from investment but that's not really what municipal courses freely receive unless in St Andrews or Carnoustie. Members of this club are rightly and fiercely proud of their course and club. Whilst you may not use the clubhouse you will thoroughly enjoy the golf course.
