Course: Royal Musselburgh Golf Club
Location: Prestongrange House, Prestongrange
Brief description: A golf club dating back to 1774, the fifth oldest club in the world. This site at Prestongrange was adopted in 1925. A James Braid design of 6,250 yards set in the grounds of the house. Tree lined and slightly undulating, the course feels very enjoyable and playable.
What to expect of the course: The course is picturesque on well kept parkland. Only four of its par 4s are over 400 yards and the par 5 9th hole is only 477 yards. Distance then is not the main consideration here, but precision is. Always well maintained, it is a straightforward walk. The three par 3s are big favourites with visitors and members.
What to expect of the overall visit: Easy to find. A good car park and an extremely friendly and helpful pro shop which deserves praise. The clubhouse could be described as ‘baronial’ or ‘majestic’. It is full of of history and delivers good, honest fare and service.
Royal Musselburgh has a great name, a good golf course and an impressive clubhouse. Don’t be intimidated; it is a must play.
