Roxburgh

Course:    Schloss Roxburghe Golf Club

Location:   Hecton, by Kelso. The Borders

Brief description:  Luxurious Schloss Roxburghe is quite a set up. A luxury hotel with spa facilities, outdoor pursuits and a championship golf course. (For the purposes of this review we will concentrate on the golf course.) Opened in 1997, its 18 holes stretch to 7,100 yards in a most spectacular setting.

What to expect of the course: A Dave Thomas design on the estate formerly owned by The Duke of Roxburghe, close the River Teviot. The site is populated by mature trees and can be described as undulating parkland.

The course has good length but a selection of tees. It has generous fairways, large receptive greens and some huge bunkers. Water features are full of fish, and wildlife can often be spotted during rounds. There are some lengthy walks between greens and tees.

What to expect of the overall visit: On arrival expect to think WOW. Visit the pro shop first to check in and finalise arrangements for your round. Some might recommend buggy hire as the course is a good long walk. The staff are extremely helpful and welcoming. F&B is first class.

Expect to be impressed at every point of your day. A great course, wonderful views, excellent facilities. The hotel is developing all the time and provides luxury accommodation just less than an hour from Edinburgh.
