Course: Rowallan Castle Golf Club
Location: Kilmaurs, Ayrshire
Brief description: Designed partly by Colin Montgomerie, Rowallan is laid out in the 600 acre site of the castle. 19 holes of parkland hoped to complement the famous links courses of Ayrshire. Maturing and improving all the time, it promises much for the future.
What to expect of the course: The large site gave the designers scope to spread the course out and use many of the features of the park. The course received early criticism for its poor drainage but this has been greatly improved.
The site is undulating with generous fairways, large dramatic greens and equally dramatic bunkering. Water features appear on many holes as well as mature trees.
The course also has the novelty of a 19th hole, a par three on which many informal matches can be decided.
What to expect of the overall visit: The castle adds real style to the set up. The Glasshouse Restaurant is a lovely friendly feature where excellent F&B can be enjoyed. The pro shop is very well stocked and lessons can be booked at The Academy. There are good warm up and practice facilities.
Everything is there for a great day out and the course is great value for money.
Go on, spoil yourself.
