Machrihanish Old

Course:    Machrihanish Golf Club

Location:   Machrihanish, Campbeltown, Kintyre

Brief description:  Over 150 years old and designed by Old Tom Morris, this remains one of the Worlds best courses. It's a journey to get there but well worth it. The Pro shop is next to the 1st tee and the clubhouse over the road. Both are superb and staff there are always delighted to see you.

What to expect of the course: The opening hole is spectacular. It could be the best opening hole in golf anywhere as you are tempted to drive  across the sea and get closer to the green. You can bail out if you want. Undulating fairways, greens like upturned saucers and a good mixture of length of holes make this golfing heaven. 17 and 18 are a wee bit weak, but not easy, in comparison to the first 16 holes but do at least give you some respite.

What to expect of the overall visit: It feels historic here. The wind usually blows which adds to the challenge but you cannot fail to be excited about your first shot of the day. Naturally, every course is usually measured on how well you play AND were this course in the central belt, it would be visited more often and everyone would rave about it always. It is that good, and when combined with all the other Kintyre courses, makes the trip very special.
