Course: Harburn Golf Club
Location: West Calder, West Lothian
Brief description: Just outside West Calder, this unsung course never gets the praise it deserves. It's in the country, has plenty car parking, a lovely clubhouse where the fayre is top drawer, and all very nicely priced. It's a vibrant club with an enthusiastic membership who realise the quality of what they've got.
What to expect of the course: Very simply, Harburn is a really good golf course. The railways runs through the centre of the course but is never in play as it's on an embankment that should never really come into play. the course is either side of the railway and there are no bad holes. There are trees, water features and in the 13th, a threatening par 3 that can make or break your day. It is not fair to single out just the 13th as there is a loop around the turn which may tested your patience already.
What to expect of the overall visit: It's not a trophy course and is inland from the better known courses but it is most certainly worth going to and playing. It probably suffers as it's out the way a wee bit, but whenever something pops up that gives you a chance to play Harburn, take it. The course will give you back whatever your ability on the day deserves. The clubhouse will consistently give you good grub.
