Course: Dumbarnie Links Golf Club
Location: Elie, Fife
Brief description: The newest of the 'stadium courses' in Scotland, this venue sits between Upper Largo and Elie and proudly dominates the dunes and machair that is entirely visible but now with a majorly impressive golf course winding through them. The car park is generous and the clubhouse informally classy, the latter being where you check in and be greeted by enthusiastic staff.
What to expect of the course: Like most stadium courses, this course offers you the opportunity to open your shoulders, go for shots, and has large but undulating greens where hitting them is not always enough. From the 1st where you hit downhill from the clubhouse, driver seems to be the right club, but a wee tweak left and suddenly its 3 off the tee. It doesn't look that intimidating but it has well designed run offs that capture the wilder shot when perhaps placement may have been wiser. Lots of good holes, water features, waste ground, large bunkers and generous but unforgiving greens make this a great golf resort.
What to expect of the overall visit: You will be superbly looked after from start to finish and it feels quite informal. Not a traditional Scottish Club by any means, as like most corporate venues, it serves a purpose to make every visitor feel like a member for a day. With this continental feel, where every golfer is a visitor, it is quite a happy place to be. Though the youngest of the stadium courses, it feels like it has been around for a while. The green fee is competitive for a 'trophy course' and ultimately, it is very much one you should add to your bucket list.
