Course: Dalmahoy East & West Course
Location: 4 miles west of Edinburgh
Brief description: The East course is the championship course whilst the west course is a gentle stroll around a fairly tight wee gem. As this is a hotel and leisure complex, there is lots of parking and lots of activity. Not a golf club as such, though the bar does have that feel about it.
What to expect of the East course: For many years the Scottish PGA championship was held here over the old layout. It has 18 holes that will test you from start to finish. 1 and 10 are almost identical par 5's that amble uphill gradually, whilst 13 and 14, the newest additions to the course, take you on an adventure through what once was a woodland. Great holes that stick out as they are unlike the rest of the course.
What to expect of the West course: Often overlooked because of its illustrious big brother, this course is a wee beauty. Shorter, tighter but armed with wee bunkers that guard tricky greens. Well worth playing as it's a good course in its own right.
What to expect of the overall visit: You'll enjoy the courses where patience is a virtue, particularly on the east course. The clubhouse is a corporate hotel therefore lacks the golf club atmosphere BUT the bar is very pleasant for post golf refreshments.
