Auchterderran

Course:    Auchterderran Golf Club

Location:   Auchterderran, Fife

Brief description:  Twice round this wee course and you will cover 5,250 yards. It may be unlike other courses you have played, with its bare surface rocks, gorse, blind shots, tight shots and need to keep the ball straight and in play. This course deserves a chance.

What to expect of the course: Auchterderran is quite unique and has a charm that needs to be appreciated. Some difficult holes are counterbalanced by more forgiving challenges. It starts with a lovely par 3 then moves uphill before the signature hole, the par 3 5th. This little beauty has a blind tee shot, an out of bounds to the left and gorse to the right. With good course management the course is a great wee test. Those who criticise Auchterderran are being very unfair; it makes the most of its site, its terrain and it’s naturally growing trees and gorse.

What to expect of the overall visit: The course is just outside the former mining town of Cardenden. It is well signposted but visitors need to keep their eyes peeled for the club’s entrance. An adequate car park awaits looking over the first tee. The clubhouse offers limited F&B but all staff and members make visitors feel very welcome.

Auchterderran is quirky. It is quite tough in places. Some fairways have surface rocks and it is not manicured like the big wealthy clubs of Fife. It is still good to play and enjoy.
